Coombabah is a residential suburb in the wetland area of the Gold Coast, bordered by Hollywell and Runaway Bay in the East, Hope Island to the North and Arundel to the South. Directly adjacent to it in the West is Coombabah Lake. The suburb is mainly known for the Coombabah Lakelands Nature Reserve, a renowned wetland conservation site that makes for a great tourist location.

The suburb’s name comes from an Aboriginal word that’s similar in form, interpreted to mean the ‘place of the cobra worms’ or ‘home of the turtles’ or a patch of land. Historically, modern-day Coombabah is an older suburb that first started off as a peripheral district of the adjacent Paradise Point and Hollywell. It used to feature mainly vacation homes and facilities. Later, the accelerated development in the area distinguished Coombabah as its own suburb.

Real estate properties here are mixed, with some charmingly renovated older brick houses as well as modern buildings. Some of the fibro huts used as vacation homes during the 70s have now been repurposed as residential dwellings with the same people coming back to this area to spend their retirement years. Coombabah also has retirement resorts and caravan grounds. The letting vacancy rate in Coombabah is estimated to be around 2.4% by rental property managers.

Today, the Coombabah suburb attracts both families and retirees with its quiet residential character. It offers a lot of playgrounds and sports facilities and a mix of private and public schools. The Coombabah High School is distinguished in Queensland, while the Gold Coast hospital is easily accessible, being only a ten-minute drive away.

The Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area, just within minutes from any location in the suburb, shelters more than 300 animal and plant species, including kangaroos and koalas. It’s also home to many fish species and belongs to the Southern Moreton Bay Marine Park.

An assemblage of migratory birds flies into the wetland each year from overseas locations, some even from Europe. Birdwatching is just one of the activities you can do with your family during visits to the park. Visitors can walk along one of the many trails and observe the rich wildlife, bike, run or simply gaze into the woods and relax. The recreational activities fit all age groups and fitness levels.

If Coombabah locals ever get bored of the Lakelands, the neighbouring Pine Ridge Conservation Park is just a seven-minute drive. The suburb’s easy access to natural riches also includes the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Burleigh Heads at only half an hour away. The fishing platform on Coombabah Creek or the Coomera River Fishing Platform both offer ample opportunities for fishing aficionados to spend quality time outdoors.

The area has good access to roads and it’s an hour away from Brisbane, while the Southport Airport is also in the vicinity, to the South. All major shopping facilities in the vicinity are within easy reach.
